Uncommonmenfrommars@ Dour Festival 2011

Uncommonmenfrommars represent a lot of things for me. It makes me think about all this time I spent on my skateboard, trying to make some cool tricks … I was 15.
I was so happy to record this band !
But the shooting was not easy. They play too loud ! Our Hard drive was suffering … and the video recording should stop every 2 minutes.
Finally, after 4 missed shots, our video engineer put a pillow under the video laptop. And Uncommonmenfrommars played as loud as they’re used to.

Another Belgian Band we recorded on last session at Dour Festival : YEW

They’re described as a folk-rock band, and they were 7 to play under the Yurt.
Just watch the video to see how they enjoy playing together !
Beautifull energy and vibrations from these guys…

Enjoy !

When we proposed Mahala Raï Banda if they wanted to play in the yurt,
we had one problem : none of them spoke English, Flemish or French !
We finally found their manager.
After two or three words in romanian, the 11 musicians of the orchestra
walked joyfully to the yurt.

It was kind of a technical challenge for our sound guys,
but the band was so easy going that everything went fine !

Mahala Raï Banda are represented by Crammed Discs

Enjoy this short jam session of Stupeflip !
2 musicians of the band took what they found in the studio, a bass and the drums.
They made kind of a cover of his well know song :”A bas la hiérarchie”.

You can listen to the original song here !
Have a look on his website and facebook !

Systema Solar @ Dour Festival 2011

Systema Solar brought the whole solar system in the yurt late at night…
They were full of energy, will to dance and play music together…
They waked us up very quickly !
You should wake up too, after this video !

So good to share this Shiny session with you.

Enjoy !

Ghostpoet @ Dour Festival 2011

Ghost Poet is a really good “souvenir” of Dour 2011 !
He was a discovery for the european public and his show was amazing.
He was a discovery for us, and he came in the yurt with his faith, his confidence, and a lot of stuff we had to plug to make this session happen !

Check out his Website !

Louis Aguilar

Louis Aguilar already played in the Attic 3 years before ( with Amelie ). He was young and promising…
Today, we’re glad to hear him again, with a drummer and a bassist, releasing a new album !

this feeling can be relived thanks to this fifth session of our Season at Dour 2011!

the two songs that Misteur Valaire play here are Ave Mucho & Mama Donte.

Hoquets @ Dour Festival (Season 6, Session 2)

The three Hoquets players are certainely very bad on ice-skates, but they really do the job on handmade wooden instruments !
Kicking on boxes and saucepans, sliding on a one string instrument that we’ll call….hum….well…”stuff”!

They will tell you about a dwarf called Napoleon ( 1815 ), a cooking recipe ( Couque de Dinant ), and a short description of Charleroi ( Cha Cha Charleroi ). They will make you smile and dance like a « monkey-python » !
Their first album, called « Belgotronics », refers to « Congotronics », a side project of Konono n°1 with Hoquets, Deerhoof, and many more, released by the famous label Crammed Discs.
Let their video show you how joyful and energetic was their performance in the Yurt at Dour Festival !

Primitiv @ Dour Festival 2011 (Season 6, Session 1)

This summer, while you were laying on a tropical beach, under the sun (or not), our Attic Addict team went for the second time setting his tents in the famous Dour festival!
Here is Primitiv, one of the session we shot during these amazing four days we spent there. This guy was just incredible, when you think about beatboxing, you couldn’t think that it goes that far and in that style! Maybe that’s why he’s the 2009 world online vice champion…. ; ) You should check more on his Myspace!

This first episode of season 6 (already??!!) is also a good moment to explain the directions we took. Before starting a new season, there’s always this time you’re wondering which new things you can bring compared to the previous season… At some point, we tried to catch up with what was happening all around the web and standards new platforms were trying to impose us, this HD apologia as a key point for any production. Today, we think we were wrong, and that Attic Addict is not meant to be shot with Canon 5D MarkII like everybody does. That’s why we came back to our good old recipes, using mostly small shity cameras, and editing all the video live. It might be sometime a bit rough, sometime a bit too much intense, but it’s what we like because it’s alive and it’s matching with the music experience. So we hope you will enjoy this new season!

Thanks for following us! and if you like these videos, feel free to share them!

Previously @ Dour Festival ( Days 2 & 3 )

Attic Addict @ Dour 2011: DAY 1!

Hey guys! this was an amazing first day at the 2011 Dour Festival!! For the second time, we’ve installed our Yurt (but this time we’ve got one more ;-) ) in the artists / press area and met plenty of great bands!
Even if Cypress Hill were too busy, I’m from Barcelona too late, Foals too lazy, we’ve had the great chance to meet, install and record live video sessions of ROMANO NERVOSO, MARBLE SOUNDS, GREAT MOUNTAIN FIRE, TAHITI 80, LUCY LUCY!, MISTEUR VALAIRE, PRIMITIV BEATBOX, and we’re about to shoot the session of SYSTEMA SOLAR!

Quite a busy day, huh? let’s see what day #2 will bring to Attic Addict!
in the meantime, stay tuned and follow us on twitter and facebook!
we’ll show you some nice pics very soon!

Bilal Live Session @ Dour Festival

Bilal from Attic Addict on Vimeo.

Bilal was a really unexpected and good suprise to us. Indeed, most of the bands who played the Attic Addict Sessions during the Dour Festival were invited by us, mostly because we knew and loved already their work. But here, Bilal simply came & asked if he could come to play with his band, so we said yes. But we must admit we didn’t know Bilal and had no idea of what his music was like, at all.
What we witnessed when he and his band (really good musicians as you will see) played was a huge talent for improvisation, a unique and sincere way of making soul / jazz music. We really felt transported during this session, which is the longest, and one of the most intense of this fourth season. So, enjoy watching Bilal making love to soul music!

Fulgeance

Fulgeance from Attic Addict on Vimeo.

This is right after playing as “Peter Digital Orchestra” during the 2010 Dour Festival that we met Fulgeance in the crowd, who had decided to stay a few more days to attend the Festival as a simple festival-goer. Being big fans of his future beats / club funk, we naturally asked him to come in the Yurt to do a session, but as Fulgeance.
More than being a great producer, Fulgeance is also amazing live. His showman and musician skills are gaining a worldwide recognition: watching this session will help you discover why…
He has just released a brand new EP, “Glamoure” on french label Musique Large, and there’s gonna be a huge party at the Social Club this 2nd of November to celebrate this great release. Don’t miss these!

Bacon Caravan Creek

Bacon Bacon Caravan Creek from Attic Addict on Vimeo.

Although Bacon Caravan Creek is not a simple name to remember (well, we did eventually find a mnemonic way to remember it: imagine a man sat in a caravan, eating bacon, and drinking Kriek (a belgian beer…) ) the band has a sound that has no comparison with any other band on the Belgian scene, and this is one of a hell distinctiveness that we invite you to discover on their newly released album “WolfWolfWolfSheepWolf”, or live, at the occasion of one of their numerous coming shows: check their myspace for more, and enjoy this 7th episode of the Attic Addict season four!

The Subways

The Subways from Attic Addict on Vimeo also available on Youtube

Before shooting this video, we must admit that we didn’t know that well The Subways, and so when we saw them playing that day in the yurt, we thought that the guitarist was hurting his strings pretty loudly for a folk band!
Actually, The Subways is not a folk band at all, but a major londonian rock trio!

This improvised acoustic session was the only way for Charlotte and Billy to have enough time to shoot this attic addict session… now you can enjoy this exclusive version of their single “Oh Yeah”!

And don’t forget to check the “full version” of the band on their myspace

Attic Addict @Dour: day #1-2-3-4 !!

Hi peeps!

things have been really crazy lately, we did not have time to manage to write this down, so now, here it is:

Thursday, July the 15th – DAY#1 :
The Yurt was finally set up, and although the night before scared us a little: a part of the yurt just flew away because of a giant storm, we managed to keep everything in place and dry.
Only 4 people of the team were already on the spot to prepare the attic addict yurt, so on this thursday, the rest of the team came to join the festival. At last the nine of us were ready to roll!
Although the line up of this first day of festival was quite enjoyable, we had managed to book only one band in advance, but it was worth it: the New York Ska Jazz Ensemble came right on time.

The guys came and plugged their instruments in no time, started to jammin’…  it was really impressive how easy these backpackers played like real masters!
At that time, we had no idea that we were to record around 25 bands in 4 days…

Then on Friday, it all got really really fxxxg crazy:

the really nice people from la DK Danse, and then the belgian rockers: Driving Dead Girl, Dancing Naked Ladies, Bacon Caravan Creek… all recorded in 3 hours!

Then, Alfred aka Daedalus came and did an amazing set, just for us… soon to watch on attic addict too!

The Zenzile guys came at 8pm, right on time. their Buddies from la DK Danse told ‘hem how cool it was in our yurt, so they came to do a session. a really, really great session.

Then came the my little cheap dictaphone guys, followed by Sharko, with a very smooth and unique session.

Our friend Fulgeance came in at midnight, and did the funniest and most entertaining session we’ve seen yet (he played as Peter Digital the day before).

And then we went to see Otto von Schirach. He came with his drummer buddy after Bong Ra’s show and they did a fucking great session which ended at around 5 am…

then comes day #3: Saturday

Mayer Hawthorne & the county came a bit late, but in no time, all the band was plugged in and ready to play a very famous standard of Soul music. No wonder why Mayer is called “the heard of soul”…

The Vismets came and it was a good surprise to discover their style, how they managed to rock so fast, so good.

Followed by Frank Shinobi, a belgian math rock band, who seemed a bit nonchalant at first sight, but in fact it was a sign of a relaxed attitude. the result: another great session, yeah!!

Bilal is the true surprise of that day: he came with his backing band, 1 hour after asking if he could play. And he decided to play till the maximum, more than 20 minutes of pure voluptuous soul and blues music. he’s for sure a revelation of this year’s festival.

Day #4, Sunday, final day

At that time, we were quite glad of all we had managed to record on such short notice. But we wanted to play it till the end, so we tried to convince as many bands as we could to come.

The Belgians from Larko came first, they had booked their session a few days ago. Our Friends from Lille Curry & Coco came right after their gig (Thomas had broken his drumset before they could finish their gig, so he was happy to come destroy ours at the attic addict session). They definitely played with much intensity, although it was one of their final dates of their tour.

The Baddies came too. Well it’s not a legend, english guys definitely know about Rock

The band Family Jamming came right after them, to do some good soul / blues music. We were happy to meet them.

Finally, we had the honor to welcome Brother Ali, accompanied with his buddy DJ Snuggles, doing the beatbox like no one, in a very unique and very special session!

Steve Von Till from Neurosis also came in, and did a huge, loud and heavy session. As the Antipop Consortium guys passed by, they stopped to listen to Steve, and were quite amazed. They wished they could play but had no time unfortunately.

Our friends from Foreign Beggars came later on, did their session although they were very tired for traveling a lot, still, it was definitely good!

For Finale, we managed to get DJ Kentaro and his technics. indescribable.

it was Monday, 6 a.m., no sound could be heard any more, the festival was finished, so were we.

A few hours later, after a few hours sleep, we packed everything and left Dour with a heavy heart, but we felt light at the same time, like still living in a dream…

We have to say a big THANK YOU to the team of the festival who welcomed us so well, all the people working there, the voluntaries, the photographs, and of course, the artists, to be so eager to play right after their gig, like no one could stop them. And we might forget some people too, but to them, we say also a big thank you from the heart. hope to see you soon guys!

We hope to show you the first videos very soon!

to be continued…
